Construction of a fence on the border with the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation with a length of 45 km will cost Lithuania €1,335 million. As the country’s Border Protection Service reported, the corresponding contract had been signed with a building contractor.
“The funds required for the construction will be allocated from the state budget”, - the Agency said. According to the plan, the fence has to be erected before the end of the current year.
Lithuania made a decision to build on the land border with the Kaliningrad region a two-meter wire fence with additional electronic control.
“The fencing will appear at the site of a convergence of borders of Lithuania, Poland and Russia near Vistytis Lake and will go through the territory of Shakaisky and Vilkavishki regions up to the Neman”, - the Border Protection Service said.
The length of the Lithuanian-Russian border will amount to 294,4 km, of which of 253,7 km will pass along the land and inland waters. The Agency believes that as a result of the construction, the protection of Lithuania’s state border and external borders of the EU will be improved.
