Moscow and Sofia will benefit more if the second string of the Turkish Stream goes to Bulgaria instead of Turkey, a leading analyst of the National Energy Security Fund, Igor Yushkov, told RNS.

However, he noted, Russia does view Bulgaria as a country under Europe’s sway, which is why, it will have to hold negotiations with Brussels on this issue, following the successful implementation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project.

“This is indeed the most advantageous route for both Gazprom and Bulgaria because the second transit line (of the Turkish Stream — editor’s note) to Turkey is not interesting from an economic point of view... The Bulgarian route is the most developed one. The gas is needed by Bulgaria itself, and from there it can also be supplied to Romania, Moldova, and further along the Serbia-Hungary route to Austria”, the expert said.

We should remind you that earlier today, on May 21, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said that his country needed direct supplies of Russian gas through the Black Sea.
