The Southern Gas Corridor, intended for the supply of Azerbaijani gas to Europe, was officially opened in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan.

“Today, as an independent state, we are firmly on our feet, we successfully fulfill all the challenges that the country faces. We implement such giant projects jointly with our partners and re-create an energy map of Europe”, President Ilham Aliyev said at a ceremony.

As a reference, the Southern Gas Corridor is a system of pipelines that provides for the supply of Azerbaijani gas to Turkey and countries in Europe.

Analyst of the Russian National Energy Security Fund, Igor Yushkov, said in an interview with the 5th Channel, that the Southern Gas Corridor should not be regarded as a competitor to Russian gas pipeline projects. He has specified that this is due to the fact that Russia delivers as much as 192 billion cubic meters to Europe. However, he added, in certain regional markets, namely in Turkey and Italy, there will be competition.

According to Yushkov, Azerbaijan is dependent on Russia in the gas issue.
