Foreigners own or rent 12m hectares of agricultural land in Russia.
The RF Minister of Agriculture, Alexander Tolkachev, spoke about this at the sitting of the corresponding committee of the State Duma. “As far as foreigners are concerned, the situation is a mess – but there must be restrictions, as in Europe and America. There they have the strictest restrictions, forbidding land ownership by foreigners”, the Minister said.
According to him, the ministry has already prepared corresponding amendments to land legislation. In particular, the term of withdrawal of land from inefficient users may decrease from 5 years to 3.
“There is a lot of free land. Only in the center are 5m hectares not used”, he stressed. To remind you, agricultural land in Russia totals 386.5m hectares, including farmland and cropped land of 196m hectares.
