Building “Canakkale-2015” bridge, which is intended to connect Lapseki region with Gelibolu Peninsula, starts in Canakkale province situated in northwestern Turkey, RIA Novosti reports on Wednesday.

Within the framework of the bridge construction, drilling operations are being carried out from a specially equipped ship, Fugro Scout, under Singapore flag. According to Anadolu news agency, the works will continue for 10 days.

Width of Dardanelles between Aegean and Marmara Seas amounts to 1,2 kilometers in the most narrow section. The 3,7-kilometer bridge is designed to be constructed from the town of Lapseki to Gelibolu in Canakkale province.

The bridge will be named “Canakkale-2015” in honor of a military success of Turkey in its Dardanelles operation conducted during the First World War.
