1.6 bln roubles will be invested in the modernization of the “Belbek” military airport, after which it will accept civil flights. As the city’s governor, Sergey Menyailo, told RIA Novosti, Sevastopol’s authorities will become co-founders of the “International Airport Simferopol” JSC.

After the reconstruction, Belbek’s civilian sector will be recognized as a branch of Simferopol Airport. This will allow them to pass certification procedures faster and launch civil flights.

A new terminal is to be built in “Belbek” airport. The design has already started. The runway’s parameters allow for the acceptance of up to 5 flights per day. The airport is needed to partially unburden Simferopol and the highway from Simferopol to Sevastopol.

Beside this, “Belbek” will be a reserve airport for Simferopol in case of adverse weather conditions.

To remind you, the work at the “Belbek” airport construction site was completed as far back as 1941. Combat aviation was based there earlier, as it still is.
