On June 27, a business mission from Japan for the first time has arrived on Southern Kuril Islands, Russia, according to the press office of the Sakhalin region.

The foreign delegation includes 69 people and representatives from 32 Japanese private companies, state and municipal bodies. The group is headed by the special adviser to the Prime Minister of Japan, Eiichi Hasegawa.

Over the course of five days, the group will visit the islands of Iturup, Kunashir and Shikotan, the report says. The document notes that the delegation arrived on the islands in order to “find out opportunities for joint economic activities of Japan and Russia on Kuril Islands”.

Earlier, the corresponding agreements had been reached by President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
