The serving head of the CIA Mike Pompeo, who is testifying now at his confirmation hearing to be secretary of state, said that he opposed the construction of Nord Stream 2, a Russia’s ambitious gas pipeline project.
Mr. Pompeo has noted in his speech posted on YouTube that he is eagerly awaiting the moment when he will be able to join the discussion over the Nord Stream 2 project. The serving CIA director has specified that he wants to make sure that there are alternatives to this project that will be in the interests of the West rather than Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Earlier, the US State Department spokesman, Heather Nauert, said at a briefing that energy companies dealing with Russia in the field of pipelines could be sanctioned within the framework of CAATSA law. In particular, she meant Nord Stream 2, reminding that the US government was against the construction of this gas pipeline which is designed to supply the blue fuel from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea.
