US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during a speech in the House of Representatives that Washington should continue its opposition to the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
Pompeo said that the USA must continue to make efforts against the implementation of Nord Stream 2 project so that it would not be realized. According to him, Washington should not allow what he called a great dependence of the EU on Russian energy resources.
He added that the USA had real opportunities to reduce the dependence of European countries on Russia through various options.
Nord Stream 2 is a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea with a length of 1220 km and a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year. It directly connects the Russian resource base and European consumers. The construction of the gas pipeline began in early May 2018 in Germany.
Earlier, Pompeo, being a candidate for the post of Secretary of State, declared during congressional hearings that he was against the construction of the Nord Stream 2.
