Following the negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin held on Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump gave an interview to Fox News, in which he assessed the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in a new light.
While earlier the U.S. President accused German Chancellor Angela Merkel of being dependent on Russia because of cooperation in the field of energy supplies, now Donald Trump has expressed a completely different opinion.
According to him, if the German authorities have decided to pay Russia “billions of dollars” for gas, it was their choice. However, he added that doing so would be a tricky task for Germany, taking into consideration its NATO membership.
The Nord Stream 2 project involves the laying of two strings of a 1,200-kilometer gas pipeline from Russia to Germany across the Baltic Sea. Its input is scheduled for the end of 2019.
