A Republican Senator John Barrasso introduced a bill in the Senate that envisages imposing sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, the politician reported on his website.
The document targets any entity involved in this large-scale project. According to the Senator, the bill will increase the energy security of NATO members. In return, he suggested that the allies should use the US energy resources.
“With an abundance of natural gas in the United States, it’s time we use American energy resources to give our allies lasting and dependable energy security,” Mr. Barrasso. He also highlighted the need to develop a transatlantic energy strategy.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump called the construction of the Nord Stream gas pipeline a “tragedy” and a “terrible mistake”.
As a reference, Nord Stream 2 is a project for building a pipeline between Russia and Germany with a length of 1220 km and a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year.
