The authorities have approved the construction of a new nuclear waste depository near the Russian city of Krasnoyarsk, the third largest city in Siberia.
A new nuclear waste depository is to be located at the uranium enrichment enterprise “Electrochemical Plant” Joint Stock Company, in Zelenogorsk. Zelenogorsk is a closed town in the Krasnoyarsk region. In the past, it was involved in enriching uranium for the Soviet nuclear program.
The present-day project envisages a waste depository storage facility, divided into sections for the subsurface storage of radioactive wastes which are insoluble in water, non-flammable and chemically inactive after 30 years. After that, the waste will be transferred to another place.
The existing storage facility is 80% full.
