China might construct its own maritime nuclear power platforms in the disputed South China Sea, local media reported on the 22nd of April. However, Chinese diplomatic sources haven't confirmed this information.
These platforms will be able to move to remote areas, providing a stable power supply, Reuters reports. The Chinese government stresses that its construction activities on these islands are being carried out for civilian purposes only.
The head of the general office of China Shipbuilding Industry Corp, which specializes in platform construction, Liu Zhengguo, said that it is actively promoting the work. According to him, the development of nuclear power platforms is a growing trend.
Mr Zhengguo emphasized that there is a strong demand for such platforms and this demand determines the number of nuclear plants to be built.
