Scientists of the Californian University of San Diego based in the USA proposed to establish on Mars a manufacture of bricks, of which the colonizers’ houses would be built later, Interfax news agency reports.

The research fellows have found that the planet’s soil was quite suitable for the production of building materials. They conducted an experiment, applying a simulated Martian soil, and managed to get small bricks.

For this purpose, the researchers created a special instrument resembling a hammer, which pressed the soil in such a way that a durable building material was made out of it. The new material surpasses reinforced concrete in its characteristics.

“We found that it was possible without heating and any additives to convert Martian soil into a solid object,” one of the researchers said.
