While the United States has been trying for a long time to obstruct the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, even such “weapon” as sanctions against the European partners of the project will not allow Washington to achieve its goal, writes Die Welt.
As the German newspaper notes, US President Donald Trump can resort to the last answer — imposing economic sanctions against those European energy companies that are partners of Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project. However, this measure is unlikely to allow the USA to achieve its goal, the author of the article believes.
In particular, economic sanctions against Russia can lead to the situation where there are even more options for financing Nord Stream 2. According to Die Welt, US sanctions can even contribute to the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project against the backdrop of a trade dispute between the EU countries and Washington.
