The EU leadership believes that the Nord Stream II gas pipeline project, when put into practice, will not result in the diversification of the ways of deliveries of this blue fuel to European countries.

This is what Dominique Ristori, the European Commission’s official, told reporters during his visit to Ukraine on April 2, 2018. According to him, for this reason, the EU leadership is unwilling to bolster this venture. Nevertheless, he has emphasized that the EC is not going to impose sanctions against Nord Stream II.

Mr. Ristori has noted that, at the moment, the EC sees two possible scenarios. The first one implies “granting a mandate” to negotiating this project with Russia, while the second one suggests amending the Union’s gas directive with the view of extending its requirements to all gas pipelines. He has specified that the EC will insist on Nord Stream II compliance with the EU principles of transparency.
