A project for the construction of a bridge connecting the Russian island of Sakhalin and Hokkaido in Japan should be studied by the expert community in terms of profitability and technical capabilities.
This was announced by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who appeared at the Eastern Economic Forum taking place these days in the Russian Far Eastern city of Vladivostok. The Japanese Prime Minister has pointed out that Vladivostok is a gateway to the Asia-Pacific region. Thus, he said, Russia is both a European and Asian country, and strengthening relations with Russia will bring Japan closer to Europe.
Answering a question about the viability of the projects under discussion for the construction of a bridge from Hokkaido to Sakhalin, as well as the tunnel from Sakhalin to the mainland, Abe stressed: “As for this project, the connection of Russia’s mainland and Sakhalin island by means of the railroad crossing can subsequently reach Japan. For this purpose, it is necessary, first of all, to study carefully at the expert level the technical capabilities and the economic profitability of the project,” Japan’s PM noted.
