Water has breached the entrance to Doomsday Vault located on Spitsbergen Island, Norway, in the Arctic where the global seed stock is kept.

The seeds are unharmed. According to Hege Njaa Aschim, a spokeswoman for the management company, the flooding was caused by the melting of permafrost.

The world’s storage on the island of Spitsbergen was built in 2008. The bunker itself, in which the seeds supply is kept in case of global catastrophe, is located at a depth of 120 meters and, according to experts, protected about the same as ballistic missile silo.

The facility was designed in such a way that even a generous melting of ice should not cause flooding. However, a year ago, the first flooding of the tunnels happened, and now the melting of ice begins to cause water penetrating in the storage itself.
