McDonald's, a fast-food chain, filed a claim of 17,8 million euro ($19,7 million) to the court against Florence, after the local authorities ban the company from launching its restaurant on Cathedral Square located in the historical part of the city.

In June, Mayor of Florence rejected an application for the restaurant construction near the famous Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. In July, a special council consulting preservation of historic development of the city confirmed this decision. Now, McDonald's, which had previously altered its application in order to meet the local requirements, claimed compensation.

The restaurant chain’s operator believes that it has faced discrimination and seeks compensation in amount of 17,8 million euro.
