Local authorities announced urgent evacuation of people living below Oroville Dam in California, the USA, due to hazardous situation, which involves the dam's emergency spillway, Reuters reports.

According to the local authorities, the auxiliary spillway might fail in the near future, what will be caused by erosion of the structure. This will lead to an uncontrolled release of flood waters from Lake Oroville.

The level of water in Lake Oroville has significantly increased because of heavy precipitation this winter followed by several dry years.

230-meter Oroville Dam was built between 1962 and 1968 and is the highest wastewater facility in the United States. Below the dam, there is a town with population of over 16,000 people.
