Rostec, a Russian state corporation, has developed a project for the space-based energy and laser-optical systems for conversion of solar energy into laser radiation, Rambler News reports with the reference to the company’s message.
The technology is planned to be applied after the year 2020.
Energy and laser-optical systems will be installed on orbital satellites. The use of oxygen-iodine laser “Foil” with a direct solar pumping with the capacity of 1GW will allow to convert the star's energy into laser radiation. The systems’ development is carried out by Schwabe holding, incorporated in Rostec.
“The draft design assignment for design and experimental work on this invention has been prepared entirely. It is planned that the final stage involving the creation of laser systems for solar energy conversion will be performed after 2020”, — the first Deputy General Director of Schwabe holding, Sergei Popov, said.
