The Special Representative of the Russian President on International Cultural Cooperation, Mikhail Shvydkoy, wants to secure the ancient ruins of Palmyra from so-called “black archaeologists”.
Speaking on Thursday at a press conference in Moscow, he reminded us that “black archaeology” is big business, as reported from the ground by our special correspondent, Maxim Krasnov.
That is why the whole territory of Palmyra should be taken under control as soon as possible, so that after mine clearing a bunch of illegal amateur archaeologists don’t rush there.
Palmyra is under the aegis of UNESCO. However, it’s a part of Syrian cultural heritage so any actions in the area of this ancient city must be solely by invitation of the Syrian government, indicated Mikhail Shvydkoy.
