Mikheil Saakashvili, the current governor of Ukraine’s Odessa region and the ex-president of Georgia, announced that the regional authorities negotiated with the U.S. officials a deal over a new airport construction, TASS reports on Friday.

“The Finance Ministry of Ukraine fails to allocate funds again. However, simultaneously we are working with the American Aviation Department over building of another airport. This will be an airport outside the city (Odessa), a large cargo terminal will be located on the same place,” the head of the Odessa region said at The Black Sea Container Summit.

Saakashvili also expressed his hope that new aviation companies would enter the Odessa market in the near future.

As a reference, on the 12th of July, Saakashvili warned that operation of the Odessa international airport would be suspended due to poor conditions of runways. In his opinion, this is connected with insufficient public funding.
