An extraterrestrial colony, where some 10 million people will be able to live and work, might appear in the Earth’s orbit as early as in 20 years, a member of the British Interplanetary Society, Jerry Stone, claims.
The expert has already announced the project for construction of such a spacecraft.
Orbital megapolis will be a many kilometers long cylinder, capable to house millions of people. Stone noticed that one of the tasks for the first extraterrestrial colony could be the construction and maintenance of solar panels.
The idea of building such a space metropolis stems from the 1970s, when Princeton Professor Gerard O'Neill asked the students to develop, on the basis of already existing technologies, a plan of a spacecraft for the space colonies’ settlement.
Now, Jerry Stone is going to revive that idea. It is planned that the colony will be a craft with a diameter slightly less than 6.5 kilometers and a length of 32 kilometers. If construction begins in 2017, it will be possible to begin the settlement in the year 2037.
