On the 4th of July, Russian President, Vladimir Putin, signed a law establishing special forest-park greenbelts around Russia's major cities.
The document was published on the website of legal information. The law restricts extraction of timber, makes amendments into the existing law “On Protection of the Environment”, as well as in Administrative Violations Code and a number of other legal acts.
In accordance with the new law, “zones with restricted conditions of natural resource use” are to be established. They can include “territories with forests and territories with green resources within the urban settlements bordering on forests and comprising an integrated ecological system”, says the document.
For extraction of timber on such territories, the law provided for punishment with a fine of up to 500,000 roubles.
