Tokyo admits that U.S. military bases might be set up in the South Kuril Islands, in case Russia transfers this territory to Japan, said the Secretary General of the Japanese National Security Council, Shotaro Yachi, Asahi newspaper reports on Wednesday, citing its source in the Japanese government.

This is what Shotaro Yachi said over the course of a meeting with Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev held in Moscow.

According to the newspaper, Yachi made such a statement, answering the relevant question raised by his counterpart.

In addition, the newspaper's source said that such “words of Yati were absolutely natural.” He explained that “when Japanese sovereignty is established on the Islands, they will automatically fall under the agreement on security guarantees between the U.S. and Japan.”
