The reconstruction of the “Temp” airfield is to be conducted on Kotelny Island, part of the New Siberian Islands archipelago, located in the Russian Arctic.

An unsurfaced runway is being expanded and lengthened at the site and its foundation is being reinforced, the press office of the Special Construction Agency told Construction.ru on the 11th of April.

At present, over 100 builders are working at the “Temp” airfield, and 37 units of road-building machinery are being exploited. The construction of massive facilities is being carried out.

As a reference, this airfield was founded in 1949. However, for the past 20 years the station and the airfield have been sealed off. In 2013, the authorities took the decision to restore the airfield, and since the autumn of that year a military unit has been garrisoned there and the airbase has been reactivated.

As soon as the runway is reconstructed, the airfield will be capable of accepting heavy-duty “Antey” and Il-76 planes, and air travel will take place year-round.
