Ukrainian authorities agreed with the USA a $260 m loan to finance construction of a nuclear wastes depository for spent nuclear fuel, which will be located in the exclusion zone of Chernobyl NPP, Energy Minister of Ukraine, Igor Nasalik, told at a press conference on Thursday.
“At last, over the course of our visit to the USA we have signed a contract and a credit agreement for $260 m for construction of at-reactor dry storage facility for spent nuclear fuel, which will be built on the territory of Chernobyl NPP.
At present, there is a nuclear wastes depository in the exclusion zone of Chernobyl NPP, however it isn’t capable to accept wastes from nuclear power stations for a long-term storage. Ukrainian authorities sent the country’s nuclear wastes to Russia, paying $150 – 200 m annually.
