China began construction of one of the world's largest cosmic-ray observatories, which will allow its scientists to study the origin of high energy cosmic rays and the evolution of the universe, RIA Novosti reports on Thursday.
The observatory is located in the mountainous areas of Sichuan province at an altitude of about 4.4 km above sea level. Investments in the project are estimated at $ 180 million.
The decision to build the facility was approved by the State Committee for Reform and Development of China at the end of December, 2015. According to the plan, construction of the observatory is scheduled to be completed in January 2021.
