The former head of the Mari El Republic, in Russia, Leonid Markelov, has been detained on suspicion of receiving a bribe, the lawyer of another defendant in the case, Igor Trunov, told TASS news agency on Thursday.
Investigators are conducting searches in Moscow apartment of Markelov’s daughter and his wife's house.
“Three people are named in the case. These are Markelov, who has been detained, and bribegivers – entrepreneur Nikolay Krivashin and the head of the local TV channel “Region 12”, Maria Kozhevnikova,” – Trunov specified.
As a reference, on April 6, Leonid Markelov at his own request was relieved of the post of еру head of the Mari El Republic. The official had been holding this position for 16 years since January 2001.
