Some 350 Turkish building firms are willing to take part in a project for the creation of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in the Turkish province of Mersin.

This statement was made by the head of Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, when he attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the NPP’s first power unit. “Over 350 Turkish firms have expressed their readiness to engage in the project,” he said.

The Akkuyu NPP project envisages the erection of four power units with Russian WWER-1200 reactors of the “3+” generation, which meet the highest safety standards. The capacity of each power unit amounts to 1,200 MW. The NPP is scheduled to be built and commissioned before 2023.

It is noteworthy that the project has been supported by the Turkish side at all its stages. So, on Thursday, the Atomic Energy Agency of Turkey granted a license to Rosatom for the erection of the NPP’s first power unit.
