US oil company ExxonMobil, Hess American and Norwegian Statoil signed with the National Oil Company of Suriname, Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname, a contract for sharing the production for block 59 in Suriname, ExxonMobil says.

ExxonMobil will be an operator of the project. After signing the contract, the partners will begin preparations to conduct exploration work, including the collection and analysis of seismic data.

Deepwater block 59 is located 305 km from the capital of Suriname, Paramaribo, and has a maritime border with Guyana, where ExxonMobil operates three marine units, including the field Liza opened by ExxonMobil in 2015.

As a reference, the Republic of Suriname is located on the northeastern Atlantic coast of South America and is bordered by French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west and Brazil to the south.
